The McAfee antivirus creator has directed a finger to a previous comment he made about DOGE years ago and claims that it is the reason he is being detained.

Software entrepreneur and creator of McAfee antivirus John McAfee said the meme coin (DOGE) has spiked over 1,000% since he last called it "coin of the week" four years ago.

In a Sunday tweet, the entrepreneur who has been largely troubled of late was recently indicted by the U.S Department of Justice for alleged security fraud and money laundary. McAfee stated that DOGE was among a host of crytocurrencies that he endorsed and tweeted about four years back. The entrepreneur said he chose coins he believed had value in a bid to defend the choice of cryptocurrencies on his "coin of the day" tweets in 2017.

McAfee was an early crypto driver as he became famous among the blockchain community just before a fallout after some wrong endorsement. He noted that the price of Dogecoin has increased over 1,000% from the time he tweeted about it and shouldnt be included in the latest pump-and-dump charges against him by the DoJ.

The famous entrepreneur cited his 2018 tweet where he wrote a short staement: "coin of the week: DOGE." At the time of the tweet Dogecoin was trading under $0.014, but dropped to $0.007 under two weeks after he made the tweet, according to Coinmarketcap data. Although, DOGE never went back up to $0.014 mark until Elon Musk made a few tweets in late 2020 which drove the coin price to $0.07.

McAfee at some point during the ICO mania stated he had a whole team for promoting crypto projects on his Twitter page, he offered a promo tweet at $105,000 per tweet. During 2017-2018 McAfee didn't just make a tweet about DOGE alone as he promoted coins like Reddcoin (RDD), digibyte (DGB), Electroneum (ETN), Humaniq (HMQ) and other within the duration.

However, the McAfee antivirus creator has been detained already after he was accused of tax evasion, on March 5, 2021. He was indicted for fraud-related charges from the U.S. Department of justice adding more problems to the already troubled entrepreneur. The regulators stated:

“The defendants allegedly used McAfee’s Twitter account to publish messages to hundreds of thousands of his Twitter followers touting various cryptocurrencies through false and misleading statements to conceal their true, self-interested motives.

As previously reported by Coinnewsafrica, the Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk could be next to come under scrutiny after it was rumoured that he could come under a potential investigation by the U.S regulators about his market moving Twitter activities related to Bitcoin and DOGE parabolic rise from late 2020.
